Level 1 Safeworking Skills for ARTC CoP

The ARTC CoP Safeworking Level 1 course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to safely undertake operational safeworking duties in accordance with the ARTC Code of Practice. Participants will gain practical training in using safeworking systems and equipment to manage and support rail operations, particularly in unattended or remote areas. The course covers key responsibilities such as operating switch locks and signalling equipment, managing local control panels, and obtaining authorities required for operating and transferring track machines as trains.

  • Operate outlying switch locks: Access and manage remote or manual switch locks as part of track configuration duties.
  • Operate signalling equipment at unattended locations: Apply correct procedures for activating and deactivating signals without direct supervision.
  • Switch in and operate local control panels: Manage local signal control operations when centralised control is not available.
  • Obtain a Train Authority (TA) for operating track machines as a train: Understand and execute the process for securing a TA in accordance with operational needs.
  • Transfer track vehicles as a train: Demonstrate how to move track machines in a controlled, authorised train movement under safeworking requirements.
