TThe Handsignaller Level 1 & 2 course is designed for rail workers who are required to perform handsignalling duties on the ARTC NSW network.

The program covers:

      • Level 1 – Fundamental handsignalling responsibilities, including the safe use of basic signals in rail worksite environments.
      • Level 2 – More complex handsignalling scenarios, including additional responsibilities in controlled rail environments.

This course is delivered in line with ARTC NSW Safeworking Rules and operational protocols and is essential for anyone providing manual signals to rail traffic to ensure safe and compliant operations.

In alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:

  • A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment
  • CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor

Completing the ARTC NSW Handsignaller Level 1 & 2 course can support further development and career progression within the rail industry.

  • Pathway to TLI21921 Certificate II in Track Protection
  • Opportunity to progress to ARTC NSW Safeworking Level 1

This course is delivered through three days of classroom-based learning and includes knowledge assessments, an in-field logbook, and practical observations to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on competence.

  • Knowledge assessments: Written tests to evaluate participants' understanding of the course material.
  • In-field logbook: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified mentor, documenting their experiences and competencies in a logbook.
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.
