The ARTC NSW Safeworking Level 2 course is designed for qualified personnel who have successfully completed Safeworking Level 1 and are ready to progress into more complex safeworking roles. The course focuses on developing the skills required to manage safeworking responsibilities under varied conditions, including issuing and acting under authorities such as Pilot Staff Working (PSW). Participants will deepen their understanding of ARTC NSW Network Rules and Procedures.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment
TLIL4074 Control and coordinate rail traffic movement
 
Certificate of Achievement

Entry Requirements Section

In alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:
  • A valid Category 1 Rail Medical assessment
  • CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry 
  • TLIC0016 Identify and respond to signals and trackside signs 
  • TLIC0084 Access rail track to travel track vehicle under manual block working conditions
  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor
  • TLIF0027 Perform lookout duties
  • TLIF2082 Perform handsignaller duties
  • TLIF2097 Use audible track warning devices
  • TLIF3058 Apply safeworking rules and regulations to rail functions 
  • TLIC0025 Pilot rail traffic within work on track authority limits
  • TLIW0007 Operate under track protection rules
  • TLIW2037 Clip and secure points
  • TLIW3026 Operate stand alone signalling/point control equipment 
  • ARTC NSW Handsignaller Level 1

  • Completing the ARTC NSW Safeworking Level 2 course can support further development and career progression within the rail industry.

Delivery Mode Section (Website)

This course begins with two days of trainer-led classroom learning, where you will develop the knowledge and skills required to safely perform the roles requirements. During the classroom component, you will complete knowledge assessments to demonstrate your understanding.
 
Following the classroom training, you will be required to complete an in-field logbook in your workplace. This practical experience must be organised by you and completed under the supervision of a qualified workplace mentor, who will verify your competency in performing the required tasks.
 
Once your logbook has been completed, you will return to TICRail to undertake a final practical assessment, where one of our qualified assessors will observe your skills and confirm your competency against the requirements of the unit.

Please note that the final practical assessment is booked separately and attracts an additional assessment fee.

  • Introducing and supervising Pilot Staff Working: Implementing Pilot Staff Working arrangements and ensuring compliance through effective supervision and coordination.
  • Interpreting ARTC NSW Network Rules and Procedures: Applying relevant safeworking rules and instructions to maintain safe rail operations.
  • Conducting worksite assessments: Evaluating site risks and selecting appropriate safeworking methods.
  • Switching in and operating local control panels: Safely operating local control panels to manage train movements and track conditions in specific areas.
  • Maintaining safeworking documentation: Completing records accurately to meet compliance and audit requirements.

  • In-field logbook: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified mentor, documenting their experiences and competencies in a logbook.
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.

The ARTC Safeworking Currency is valid for 2 years from the date of successful completion.

To maintain your currency, you must complete the applicable ARTC Safeworking Recertification requirements before your current certification expires.

What You Need to Provide

To complete your recertification, you must submit three (3) pieces of evidence demonstrating that you have performed the required duties of your specific ARTC Safeworking role.

Your evidence must:

  • Be from within the past two (2) years.
  • Include at least one (1) piece of evidence from within the past six (6) months.
  • Demonstrate the required duties relevant to the role(s) you are seeking to recertify.
