Drive Your Future Forward on Road and Rail

This course is designed for individuals who need to safely access the rail track to operate a rail-bound machine within a defined worksite during rail maintenance or construction activities.

Participants will learn how to conduct pre-operational and post-operational checks, stable self-propelled on-track vehicles safely, operate on-track equipment, and complete all required documentation. The course covers the operation of all medium/heavy types of rail-bound on-track vehicles in accordance with network safety requirements.

Units of Competency

Operate road rail vehicle

TLIC2054
Access rail track to run track vehicle in defined

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure you are trained to operate road-rail vehicles in accordance with rail safety and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of incidents and ensuring alignment with network access protocols.
  • Practical Experience: Combines theory-based learning with hands-on practical training and vehicle operation in simulated or live rail environments, reinforcing confidence and job-readiness.
  • Industry Recognition: The course is recognised by major rail operators and infrastructure contractors, enhancing your employability.

This course is intended for:

  • Existing plant or machinery operators who need to operate medium/heavy rail-bound plant within rail environments

  • Infrastructure and civil construction workers accessing the rail corridor

  • Contractors and subcontractors performing work on rail operator networks

  • Anyone seeking to formalise existing skills and obtain nationally recognised units of competency

  • Prepare medium or heavy self-propelled on-track equipment for safe operation, including pre-start inspections, fault identification, and documentation.
  • Operate on-track equipment under defined worksite conditions, maintaining situational awareness, speed control, and compliance with network rules.
  • Respond appropriately to operational hazards, track conditions, and emergency situations while travelling or positioning rail-bound equipment.
  • Complete shutdown, securing, and post-operational requirements, including reporting, documentation, and equipment handover.
  • Interpret worksite protection requirements and confirm authority to access the rail track in accordance with safeworking rules and network procedures.

  • Knowledge assessments: Written tests to evaluate participants' understanding of the course material.
  • In-field activities: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified trainer
